The GIY (Grow it Yourself) organisation are meeting in Sligo Central Library. This Group, chaired by Niall McAlister, was formed so that organic farmers and like minded plant and vegetable enthusiasts had a forum where they could voice their opinions. It allows all to share their knowledge base with each other regarding growing your own foodstuffs. If interested in joining this group please ring Sligo Central Library on 071 9111675.

For National Tree Week, Sligo County Libraries (in conjunction with Sligo County Council's Environment Section) will distribute approx 100 sapling trees of Irish stock (inc Ash, Sycamore and Oak) to our customers over the period of National Tree Week on a first come-first served basis.

 

Date: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays every week.

FAS and Sligo Libraries have relaunched the popular computer classes and workshops and are scheduled for Sligo Library branches as follows;
Tuesdays 9.45am - 11.15am and 11.15am to 12.45pm: Local Studies and Reference Library, Bridge Street, Sligo.
Wednesdays 10.00am - 1pm: Central Library, Stephen Street, Sligo.
Fridays 10.00am - 11.30am: Tubbercurry Community Library, Humbert Street, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo

The launch of the Sligo Library Services online Literary Journal,The Cathach - Volume II, will be held in Sligo Central Library, Stephen Street, Sligo. To co-incide with this event is an exhibition of Library Collection Portraits and music. Entry is free and all are welcome.

 

May Events

An Open University Information evening will be held in Sligo Central Library, Stephen Street, Sligo on Tuesday 10th May at 5pm. This Seminar will run for 2 hours between 5pm and 7pm.

The Open University, open to people, places, methods and ideas, provides high-quality university education to all.

For employers and individual students, whatever your learning and training needs, staff are available to provide information and advice to guide you onto the right course.

Once you start studying we will support you or your employees through to successful completion and achievement of the appropriate qualification.

The Open University in Ireland has 55 staff in the Belfast National Centre, 6 in the Dublin Enquiry and Advice Centre and 348 part-time tutors supporting over 7,500 local students.

Kids' Own Publishing Partnership

Dates: Wednesday 8th June, Thursday 9th June and Friday 10th June

Kids Own Travelling Library in Tubbercurry Community Library

Free Workshops for Parents and Toddlers

Kids' Own are working with Sligo Library Service to offer free workshops for parents and toddlers. Parents and Toddlers will work together through rhyme, drawing and song to create their own books and to have their work published in Kids' Own Book.

The places are limited so please book early. The workshops are open to one parent and one child aged 3 - 4 years old. To particiapte parents are required to commit to the 3 mornings or afternoons.

The Kids Own Travelling Library will be resident in the library over the 3 days and holding open sessions with all age children in book making activities.

As part of the Sligo Library Service Scope programme of events, Sligo Central Library is hosting the Sligo Culture Open Platform with live performance, music and magic for all ages. The venue is Central Library, Stephen Street, entry is free and all are welcome.

Autumn 2011

Sligo Central Library

On Tuesday 27th September Sligo Dyslexia Association will hold its inaugural weekly workshop from 5pm to 7pm.

Fred Freeman will give a storytelling session for local schools on October 5th as part of Children's Book Festival 2011.

All Ireland Poetry Day is Thursday 06th October. Lunchtime readings by Paul Meehan and Tony Curtis will take place.

G.I.Ys monthly forum for organic farmers and vegetable enthusiasts will take place on Tuesday October 11th.

On Thursday 13th October as part of the Children's Book Festival 2011, Barcelo and Carbonnell Childrens give a storytelling session for local schools.

Central Library Bookclub monthly meeting takes place at 5.45pm on Tuesday 18th October 2011

On Friday 9th December 2011 a Book Launch of publication by Dr. Murray, facilitated by Kennys bookshop will take place. 

FAS computer classes will be resuming shortly, due to popular demand. Please leave details at respective branch libraries where we will pass on to designated FAS contacts.

Ballymote Community Library

As part of Volunteering Week, Sligo Volunteering Centre will be hosting a Volunteering Fair in Ballymote Community Library on Tuesday 27th of September from 2 to 5 pm. All are invited to come and meet members of organisations and find out firsthand about the role of volunteers.

On the 5th of October there will be a storytelling session for children from local schools with Fred Freeman as part of Children's Book Festival 2011.
