Donal Ryan, from Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, is the author of six novels and a short story collection. He has won several awards for his fiction, including the European Union Prize for Literature, the Guardian First Book Award and four Irish Book Awards, and has been shortlisted for several more, including the Costa Book Award and the Dublin International Literary Award.
He was nominated for the Booker Prize in 2013 for his debut novel, The Spinning Heart, and again in 2018, for his fourth novel, From A Low and Quiet Sea. In 2021 he became the first Irish writer to be awarded the Jean Monnet Prize for European Literature.
His work has been adapted for stage and screen and translated into over twenty languages. His seventh book, The Queen of Dirt Island, was published by Doubleday in August 2022 and was an instant number one bestseller.
A law graduate and former civil servant, Donal has lectured in Creative Writing at the University of Limerick since 2014 and lives in Castletroy with his wife Anne Marie and their two children.
Elske Rahill is a Dublin-born novelist and short story writer. She is the author of the novels Between Dog and Wolf and An Unravelling and the short story collection In White Ink. Her debut was listed by the Irish Times as one of ‘The Best Books by Women of the 20th Century’. Her work has appeared in many literary journals and anthologies including The Stinging Fly, Agni, The Dublin Review, The Tangerine, Winter Papers, and The Faber Anthology of New Irish Short Stories. She teaches on the Writing and Literature programme at Atlantic Technology University in Sligo, where she lives with her partner and four children.
Seamie O Dowd is a renowned guitarist, singer, and songwriter who also plays fiddle, harmonica, mandolin, and a number of other instruments. He has travelled worldwide playing music and has shared stages and played with many great musicians and bands including, The Chieftains, Dervish and Steve Wickham.
The Open Mic is a first-come, first-serve bases limited to five names. Names are taken on the evening, participants are asked to keep within a three minute time-frame.
The Word, Wednesday 28th of September, will take place in Sligo Central Library, Stephen Street from 6.30pm. This is a free unticketed event with limited seating, doors close at 6.30pm.
