Summer Stars 2021 is Online!

The Summer Stars 2021 reading programme is fully online, commencing Monday 14th June, and running until the end of August 2021.

We’re delighted to inform you that Summer Stars 2021 will welcome back a return of rewards!
Sligo libraries have the following Summer Stars rewards:
• Children’s drawstring bag with personalised text ‘Sligo County Council’
• Bookmark with design full colour printed both sides and gloss laminated
• Graphite pencil with rubber eraser
Children will receive all rewards (bag, pencil & bookmark) when they’re signing up for Summer Stars 2021

National Story Competition: There is a slightly different format to the short story competition this year. Entrants to the National Story Competition are asked to use the following opening line: ‘Of all the places in the world, I never thought I would be here…’. The 500 word limit will apply
again this year, children can submit as many stories as they like, and the age

Competitions for Sligo Libraries Summer Stars: This year we once again have four competitions, open to all Sligo Libraries Juvenile members.

  1. A photo of you and a book (Photo competition: closing date is 16th July)
  2. My favourite book is… (Short story: closing date is 30th July)
  3. Write a poem (Poetry competition: closing date is Aug 13th Aug)
  4. Colour your Summer Stars drawstring bag and send us a photo of it (Art competition: closing date 20th Aug)

For each competition, there are three age categories: Age 0-5, 6-8 and 9-12.

  • The overall winner of each competition will receive an Android Tablet.
  • There will be one winner of each age category, they will each receive a voucher for Liber.
  • There will also be a number of chances to win a Fabio’s Ice Cream voucher for each competition.

Finish the story to enter this year’s Summer Stars short story competition!

This year we are moving online. As well as enjoying all the amazing worlds you visit when reading books, Summer Stars is celebrating your imagination by running a short story competition.

This year, as well as enjoying the all the amazing worlds you visit when reading books, Summer Stars is celebrating your imagination by running a short story competition. The competition is open to 6-18 year olds living in the Republic of Ireland – of course 6 year olds won’t be competing against teenagers! There are three age categories: age 6-9, age 10-14, age 15-18.  

To enter, write a story using the following opening line:

Of all the places in the world, I never thought I would be here.

There will be 15 finalists in each category and one national winner from each category.

Prizes

Each category winner will receive a Tablet.

Each finalist in all categories will receive a €50 voucher.

That’s a lot of great prizes and a lot of chances to win so let your imagination fly and start writing today!

Terms & Conditions

  1. This competition is open to children living in the Republic of Ireland.
  2. There are three categories: Age 6-9, Age 10-14, Age 15-18.
  3. Stories may be written in Irish or in English.
  4. Stories must use the following opening line:
    Of all the places in the world, I never thought I would be here…
  5. Stories must be no longer than 500 words.
  6. The competition is open for entries from 14th June to 31st August.
  7. Entrants can submit as many stories as they wish.
  8. All entries to be submitted in digital copy (e.g. Word, PDF) to summerstarsstory@lgma.ie by 5pm on 31st August. Hard copies will not be eligible.
  9. In the email, entrants must include:NAME
    AGE
    CONTACT PERSON
    CONTACT NUMBER
    NAME OF LOCAL LIBRARY SERVICE.This information will only be available to the Libraries Ireland, LGMA team. This information and the competition entry itself will only be kept for the duration of the competition.
  10. Please use ‘Summer Stars Story’ as the subject line of the email.
  11. Entries must the original and unpublished work of the entrant.
  12. The entrant’s name mustnot appear anywhere in the text of the story as judging will be anonymous.
  13. There will be no correspondence with the judging panel and no feedback provided to individual entrants.
  14. There will be two rounds of judging for each category. In Round One, stories will be shortlisted and 15 will be selected to go through to the national judging final. In Round Two, a national winner will be selected from each category.
  15. The decision of the judges is final.
  16. The winning and finalist entries from each category will be uploaded to Libraries Ireland and the winner’s local public library website.

Public libraries are calling on all 6 – 18 year olds to write a story, no more than 500 words, on An Unexpected Adventure. There are three age categories: age 6-9, age 10-14, age 15-18. ✏️
