Local Studies Collection

A Local Studies Collection involves both the concept of living history and responsibilities to future historians thus it will always continue to grow. Our aim is to collect, organise and make available materials relating to Sligo and its people. Over the past fifty years Sligo Library has attempted to carry out the task of accumulating these items.

ARCHIVES

Sligo County Council employs an Archivist in accordance with its statutory obligations under the Local Government Acts of 1994 and 2001. The Archivist is responsible for the care of the archives and records in the custody of the council.

GENEAOLOGY

The main genealogical sources for research are;

  • The Tithe Applotment books 1824-1835
  • Griffith ‘s Valuation 1857.
  • 1901 and 1911 Census.
  • Parish Records
  • Estate Rentals
  • Graveyard  Inscriptions
  • Many other miscellaneous surveys and listings
