Cathaoirleach launches new Sligo Libraries Story Trail at Harbour Park, Finisklin

Cathaoirleach Councillor Dónal Gilroy launched a new Story Trail at Harbour Park, Finisklin, joined by children who designed the Story Trial with artist and author Wayne O’Connor.

In 2025 Sligo Libraries held a series of workshops for children aged 9 to 12 years, facilitated by Wayne O’Connor. The children named their group The Story Hunters and explored Sligo myths and legends to create a Story Trail. The Legend of Balor of the Evil Eye was their chosen legend, and their creative talent is on display with scenes illustrated by each child.

Working with Micheál Condren, Senior Executive Park Superintendent, the new Harbour Park at Finisklin was selected as the location for the Story Trail.

Developed with sustainability and accessibility in mind, the installation is part of a broader initiative to revitalise public spaces and encourage outdoor activity. This new outdoor Story Trail will delight visitors of all ages and enhance the Park’s role as a vibrant community space.

The Legend of Balor of the Evil Eye Story Trail is displayed on pedestals along the path encouraging children and families to follow the story in an engaging and active way.

Cathaoirleach Councillor Dónal Gilroy said,

“It’s a real joy to see the creativity and imagination of our young people come to life in such a meaningful way. The Story Trail at Harbour Park is not just a celebration of Sligo’s rich mythological heritage, but also a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and the arts, in shaping vibrant public spaces. I commend the incredible work of The Story Hunters, Wayne O’Connor, and all involved in making this project a reality. This trail will inspire generations to come and reflects the heart of what Creative Sligo is all about.”
