Prior to use:

  • The Librarian will ensure all batteries are inserted correctly in the underside of the monitor and RESET the monitor before and after each loan to delete all stored radon data. Use a pen to press the reset button on the back of the monitor.

Getting Started:

  • After resetting, the display shows “CAL” (calibration) for 30 seconds before changing to the “Long Term Average” screen. The display shows up to four flashing dashes which lasts between 6 to 24 hours before a reading is displayed. An indicator (dot) flashing in the top right corner indicates that the monitor is active.
  • Place and leave the monitor in the main living area downstairs for a minimum of one week during the loan period. Place the monitor at least 50cm above floor level and at least 150cm from the nearest door. Avoid placing it near doors, windows, or drafts, close to heaters or radiators or in damp/humid areas.
  • Note: If “Err” and a number is displayed, press “RESET button”, remove/reinsert the batteries after cleaning its contacts. If the “Err” persists, please contact your local library.

Using the Monitor:

  • You can get an indication of the radon level in the room you are monitoring from the long-term average displayed on the monitor. The long-term average updates daily and represents the average value for the measurement period.
  • The short-term average alternates between showing radon values for the last day (updated hourly), and for the last seven days (updated once a day). Please disregard the short-term average value.
  • The MODE button can be used to get information on the number of days since the monitor started for the first time or the last RESET operation (displays on the lower half of the screen for 20 sec).
    • It’s recommended to keep the monitor continuously
    • Replace batteries when the battery indicator shows low level on display (upon battery replacement, the monitor is reset, and all stored data is deleted).

For your information:

  • The Reference Level for radon for homes in Ireland is 200 becquerel per cubic metre (200 Bq/m3) based on a three-month measurement. To find out more about carrying out a three-month test in your home, please visit epa.ie/environment-and-you/radon/radon-testing
  • The results of measurements less than three-months are indicative only and not a replacement for a three-month measurement.
