Sligo Central Library will be hosting The Word on Wednesday 26 of March at 6:30pm.

Bridget Hourican is a journalist and historian who has written for the Irish Times, Time Out and The Dubliner. She is editor of Straight from the Heart: Irish Love Letters and a contributor to the Dictionary of Irish Biography. Her biography of the Romantic poet, James Clarence Mangan, Finding Mangan, the Lives and Afterlives of Ireland’s National Poet, was published to critical acclaim in August 2024 and shortlisted for an Irish Book Award.

Dr Keith Hopper teaches on the Writing & Literature Programme at ATU Sligo. He is the author of Flann O’Brien: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Post-modernist (revised edition, 2009), and has edited twenty books on Irish literature and film. His most recent book is A Door Opening: Sligo and the Legacies of Partition (2023), which he co-edited on behalf of Sligo County Libraries. He is a regular contributor to the Times Literary Supplement.

Ray Coen is a singer, guitarist and fiddler, probably best known to our audience as a member of Sligo Band “NoCrows” who have recorded 7 albums of mostly original music and toured all over Europe.

Apart from his work with NoCrows he regularly tours in a duo with Steve Wickham, has recorded and performed with numerous bands and solo artists, and released his own solo album “Out of Sight” in 2009.

Seamie O’Dowd Seamie O Dowd is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter who also plays fiddle, harmonica, mandolin, and a number of other instruments.
He has travelled worldwide playing music and has shared stages and played with many great musicians and bands.

His experience also includes recording production, teaching and more recently, film soundtrack work, and encompasses solo performance as well as extensive work with bands and small groups as both a member and a session musician.

The Word is a collaborative event between Sligo Central Library and the BA in Writing & Literature course at Sligo ATU.

Please note that there will be no Open Mic event for this edition of The Word. Instead, there will be a book launch at the end of the event to mark the publication of Liv-Andrea Banner’s debut novel De Skyldiges Klub (Guilt Society). Liv-Andrea was born and raised in Aarhus, Denmark, and is currently completing her BA (Hons) in Writing & Literature at ATU Sligo.
