Sligo Central Library will be hosting The Word on Wednesday 30 of April at 6:30pm.

Elaine Garvey is from Strandhill, County Sligo. The Wardrobe Department (Canongate, 2025) is her first novel and has been selected by The Irish Times and the BBC on their reading lists for 2025. Elaine’s short stories have been published by The Dublin Review and Winter Papers.

Una Mannion is a novelist and short story writer. Her debut novel A Crooked Tree (Faber 2021) was shortlisted for The Irish Book Awards Newcomer of the Year, the Dalkey Emerging Writer Award and was winner of the Kate O’Brien Prize. Her second novel, Tell Me What I Am (Faber 2023), was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature’s Encore Award and was winner of the prestigious CWA 2024 Gold Dagger Award. In 2024, she was nominated for the An Post Irish Book Awards’ ’New Voices: 20 Best New Irish Writers’.

Before joining the Oscar Wilde Centre and English Department at Trinity College Dublin, Una taught at ATU Sligo for 25 years where she founded the Writing + Literature programme

Felip Carbonell was born in the island of Mallorca in Spain and now lives in the village of Strandhill. Felipe has worked in different aspects of the music industry since the late 80’s and has worked as a full-time musician, performing solo or with one of hte several bands he’s involved with, including four albums with NoCrows.

Open Mic: The Open Mic is limited to 5 participants, with a three-minute timeframe per performance. Names taken on the evening.

The event is free and unticketed with limited seating. The doors will close at 6:30pm.

The Word is a collaborative event between Sligo Central Library and the BA in Writing & Literature course at Sligo ATU.
